Bio:

I began my career in the public-school setting, primarily working with adolescents. In 2008, I branched out into private practice, specializing in social-language classes for young children on the Autism spectrum. In 2009, I began in-home early intervention and prevention services in the Wauwatosa and Cedarburg areas. When my daughter was diagnosed with a profound feeding disorder and failure to thrive, I received a certification in the Sequential Oral Sensory Approach® to feeding and the Beckman Oral Motor Protocol®. Since then, I have specialized in feeding and oral motor disorders in newborns through young adults in a private outpatient setting. I take great pride in the care we provide and how our practice has evolved over the years. We look forward to the future as we continue our mission to strive for innovative treatment to enhance the lives of our families.

Treatment Philosophy:

Working with such wonderful clients and families is truly a privilege. I love watching a client reach his/her potential and celebrating achievements with families, even years after therapy has ended. I’m not only thinking about how we want to be successful this week but what we need for success in the future. Every session we will celebrate new achievements and collaborate to determine the best way to incorporate therapeutic techniques and skills into daily life to maximize progress. Through every challenge I encounter, I try to see the situation through the eyes of the family and patient. It is my belief that children are always doing the best they can, given their current abilities. If things are not progressing as we (the adults) would like, we go beyond traditional approaches to identify what therapies will best help the individual. Experiences with my own children have given me a very unique perspective on how challenging and overwhelming life is when your child is not “progressing.” This mindset has led me to seek out training that allows me to maximize treatment outcomes for our clients. Based on individual needs, we will incorporate components of social/emotional development, neuroplasticity, mindfulness, responsive parenting, and nutrition.

What our families have to say about working with Jordan…

“Working with Jordan Beck changed the trajectory of our daughter’s life…Jordan’s demeanor and gentle approach immediately put my daughter at ease. Jordan quickly and expertly identified areas of issue and put together a well laid out plan for overcoming those issues”

“I know you have a lot on your plate right now. Having a child with extra challenges is overwhelming enough without having to add in another therapy or another plan to put into effect. But Speech Therapy will change everything. You will have a partner in Jordan, a person who is on your side and your child’s side. You will find ways to solve problems and improve life in your home with your child. It will not be easy, but you’ll have a smart, creative, kind, and thoughtful team member in Jordan.”

Julia has experience working in early education, elementary education, and outpatient hospital settings. All areas required continuous communication and collaborative team work. Interdisciplinary work is what brought her to this practice. Her goal is to help the child and their family reach their full potential. Areas of special interest include: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Infant Feeding, expressive and receptive language disorders, myofunctional disorders, and tethered oral tissue (TOT). In the past year she has sought out continuing education opportunities related to feeding, oral motor skills, and TOTs in order to best serve the growing need for families in our community.

Treatment Philosophy:

I aspire to help my patients achieve their greatest potential at their current level. I believe that through active involvement of family, caregivers, loved ones, and providers we can achieve greatness with every child. I feel that creating open lines of communication, working as a team, and utilizing evidence based practices allows for the greatest progress. I truly enjoy seeing my patients have “light bulb” moments, whether that is an infant taking the pacifier for the first time or a child learning about a new food. I remain committed to continuing my education and building my skills to help facilitate learning for all of my patients.

Bio:

Melissa Hying, M.S., CCC-SLP, completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and received her master’s degree from Marquette University in 2012 with a Bilingual English-Spanish specialization. She is fluent in Spanish and basic American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary. She furthered her signing skills while providing services to students ages 3-14 at Milwaukee Sign Language School. She then worked in an early childhood special education classroom in the Chicago area, collaborating closely with the occupational therapist, physical therapist, and teachers. Upon returning to Milwaukee, she continued to serve in an interdisciplinary team of therapists working directly with families in their homes through Milwaukee County Birth to Three. These experiences provided opportunities to work alongside and learn from other disciplines in order to support the whole child, which she brings to her current practice. In addition to bilingualism and hearing loss, areas of special interest include: Autism Spectrum Disorders and social skills, receptive and expressive language disorders, fluency, and feeding difficulties. In the past year she has sought out continuing education opportunities related to feeding and oral motor skills in order to best serve the growing number of feeding challenges our families face today.

Treatment Philosophy:

I believe the ability to counsel and connect with our patients and families is just as important as providing individualized intervention, education, and home programming. I enjoy engaging in conversation and collaboration with families each week not only to address target skills, but also to provide support for their pressing questions and concerns. The most rewarding part of my job is celebrating individual accomplishments, large and small, with families. For me, private practice combines the best elements from my previous experiences in that I am able to work hand in hand with families and patients to design personalized therapy to foster success. I am committed to continued learning and implementation of current best practices in order to meet the needs of those we serve.

What our families have to say about working with Melissa…

My 4 yr. old struggled severely with not being able to communicate. Now, A is a totally different person, we still have a long journey ahead, but Melissa is AWESOME and her knowledge and advice for A is stellar. I could not imagine our lives at this point without her. Melissa’s knowledge of so many spectrum related questions and concerns is what I most appreciate. I can comfortably ask ANYTHING and Melissa is able to assist me, she continues to go above and beyond involving my daughter. Even attending an offsite conference to assist the childcare staff with suggestions and answering questions.

Bio for Jessamyn Jessamyn Reiter, MS, CCC-SLP, graduated from UW-Madison with a Masters in Communication Disorders, with a concentration in education, in 2005. Since that time she has worked in outpatient rehabilitation, UW-Hospital’s acute and rehab care, preschool and elementary schools, and Ravinia Reading Center in Ravinia, IL which is owned and operated by speech therapists. It was there that she developed her love for helping children improve their language and literacy skills. She furthered her expertise in literacy through training in the SPELL-Links to Reading and Writing curriculum. In her literacy and language therapy, she synthesizes her knowledge in language and speech sounds with practical and systematic skills children need to improve reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, sound patterns, and organization of language. Jessamyn is so motivated to do this work because of the progress she sees in her clients and the difference it makes in their lives. In addition to her education in helping children with literacy concerns, Jessamyn has also sought out specialized training in myofunctional therapy, articulation therapy, and Beckman oral motor training.

Treatment Philosophy I believe that listening and understanding are key components of being an effective and compassionate therapist. Through ongoing communication with families and in depth assessments of the children I work with, I seek to gain understanding of their strengths as well as areas of challenge. I encourage children to feel confidence and pride throughout the therapy process. My goal is to be a resource and support for my patients and their families. My philosophy within therapy sessions is to always stay aware of the right level of challenge and make adjustments in therapy as indicated by the child’s progress. I bring my background in mindfulness and yoga into my philosophy as well, understanding the importance of being present in the moment in order to fully listen and engage with each child.
